Ptolemy, in his treatise Optics, held an extramission-intromission theory of vision: the rays (or flux) from the eye shaped a cone, the vertex becoming within the attention, and the base defining the visual subject. The rays were being sensitive, and conveyed information again to your observer's intellect about the gap and orientation of surfaces.
